Topic: What the horse owner looks for when buying hay

After more than 33 years of service to Utah State University, Scott retired in 2008. His responsibilities ranged from county agent to Director of the State 4-H Program. In 2009, Scott was hired back to USU at 25% to continue the expansion of the Small Acreage Programs. He is aiding new and existing small parcel owners better utilize their valuable land resources. Scott is a Horseman, AFA Certified Farrier, and part time Nevada Buckaroo.

Glenn Shewmaker, Ph.D.
Extension Forage Specialist, University of Idaho

Topic: Seeding rates for alfalfa and alfalfa mixtures

Glenn is associate professor and extension forage specialist with the University of Idaho. He has state-wide responsibilities to conduct research and to organize extension programs in forage management and utilization. Glenn received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Animal Science from the University of Idaho and his Ph.D. in Range Science with emphasis in plant ecophysiology from Utah State University. Raised on an irrigated row-crop and forage farm near Kimberly, Idaho, Glenn is still involved with the family’s beef cow/calf and feeder operation.

Topic: Roundup Ready alfalfa update and new biotech traits

In August 2005 seed of the first Roundup Ready alfalfa varieties was offered for sale. This was the first biotech trait to be commercialized in alfalfa, and has opened the doors for research supporting a second wave biotech traits enhancing value in alfalfa .This presentation will discuss several of these new traits including reduced lignin, improved by-pass protein and drought resistance.
